In many of the areas we work people live in mud and stick houses. These homes provide very little shelter from the elements and also provide ideal living conditions for the triatomine bug. This beetle is responsible for the spread of Chagas disease which is incredibly widespread in the areas where we work (the highest infection rates in the world). Agua Yaku is responding to this problem by beginning to develop housing solutions that would provide much safer and longer lasting housing alternatives. Our first project has been the construction of a sand bag house.

This fits inside of our ministry philosophy very well.

Just like our wells and pumps, the house is build entirely out of locally available and low cost materials. Labor intensive but financially affordable this style of building could offer a solution to communities looking to establish safer homes and help eliminate Chagas. We hope to keep moving ahead implementing this as part of our compassionate impact in communities.

This week a group from Crossroads Church in Lexington, Kentucky stopped by for a day to help out.

Agua Yaku needs you!

Up until this point a majority of our budget has been funded by a couple generous churches and a handful of large donors. We are seeing the need to develop a large base of regular donors to fund the ongoing operation of Agua Yaku. With this base in place we will be able to strategically use larger donations to replace aging equipment and improve our facilities. We are currently looking for one hundred and fifty people to join in support Agua Yaku for $50.00 a month. If you would be interested in being part of project 150x$50 sign up via our donate page and let us know in the comments of this post.

Clean water. You probably take it for granted. But the lack of it is threatening the health, and even lives, of countless people around the world.

Agua Yaku, which means water in both Spanish and Quechua, is helping to provide clean water to rural communities in Bolivia, South America.

It uses very basic techniques, and the simplest technology. In fact, several wells are drilled by hand. Drilling a new well directly involves members of the communities, which establishes their ownership and responsibility right from the outset, as well as an understanding of how the well works.

Remarkably cost-efficient, and supported by a gifted international team, Agua Yaku is bringing community to life!
